الوصف: This paper describes the Viterbi decoding algorithm to decode the convolution codes which are the forward error correcting codes. The most widely used decoding algorithm Viterbi Algorithm (VA) requires an exponential increase in hardware complexity to achieve greater accuracy, if the constraint length associated with the input bits are large. So it is necessary to implement a larger constraint length with lesser hardware and lesser computation for decoding the original data. When the decoding process uses the Modified Viterbi Algorithm (MVA) a reduction in number of computations and reduction in the hardware utilization is possible, which follows the maximum-likely-hood path. The paper involves the design of convolution encoder and Viterbi decoder with code rate and constraint length 7. The design is implemented on XC3S400 FPGA device of Spartan family and simulations are done on Xilinx 12.2c tool with Verilog coding. The result shows the reduction in utilization of logic resources and hence lesser area.
