الوصف: |
S elf-help Groups (SHGs) have emerged as significant platforms for women's empowerment in India. Originating from initiatives like the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) in 1972 and later propelled by government-backed projects like the SHG Bank Linkage Project, SHGs have grown into a powerful force for socio-economic change. The National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), later restructured as Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), has been instrumental in scaling up SHG interventions across India since 2011. By mobilizing over 10 crore rural women into more than 76 lakh SHGs, DAY-NRLM aims to reduce poverty and empower women through financial inclusion and livelihood promotion. The success of SHGs in empowering women is evident from studies showing improvements in political participation, financial literacy, and decision-making skills among SHG members. Through mortgage-free micro-loans and collective decision-making, SHGs empower women to take on social responsibilities and challenge traditional gender dynamics. However, challenges still persist, including regional disparities in SHG coverage, lack of skilled resource personnel, and issues related to financial management and leadership. To address these challenges, there is a need for enhanced training, greater financial inclusion, and convergence of schemes at the grassroots level. SHG movement represents a powerful force for women's empowerment in rural India. By addressing existing challenges and fostering greater collaboration, SHGs can continue to be catalysts for positive change, transforming communities and empowering women to build a better future. |
