| الوصف: | M.Phil. ; Authoritarian regimes always want to control the information received by people and manipulate their ideology. However, their effort can be counteracted by information from outside of the country. This paper studies how western media affect people's political ideology in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Signal for western television and radio could not be fully received in Dresden region due to geographical reasons, while it was available in all other regions of our sample. Using Dresden as an instrumental variable for western media consumption, I find that people consume more western media were less likely to have ideology consistent with the GDR government, and their loyalty to GDR was also eroded. After reunification, the effect of western media on political ideology disappears, but the negative attitude towards authority brought by western media is persistent. ; 威權制度國家常常想要控制和操縱人民接收到的信息以及他們的意識形態，但是他們的努力時常會因為來自於國外的信息而受到削減。本文研究了東德時期來自於西方的媒體會對東德人民的意識形態產生怎樣的影響。由於地理原因，德累斯頓地區不能完全接收西方電視和廣播的信號，而在本文使用樣本的其他地區信號都可以被很好地接收。本文使用是否居住在德累斯頓地區作為工具變量，發現使用更多的西方媒體會讓東德人偏離東德官方意識形態，他們對於國家的忠誠也會減弱。兩德合並之後，這種西方媒體造成的意識形態的差異逐漸消失，但是能接收西方媒體信號地區的人即便在長期也仍然更加不信奉權威。 ; Yang, Li. ; Thesis M.Phil.
