On 2023-05-09, the authors hosted a virtual workshop on change languages in ontologies and knowledge graphs. Representatives of multiple ontologies and data resources participated. We focused on the kinds of biological ontologies found in ontology repositories such as BioPortal (https://bioportal.bioontology.org/), and in particular on ontologies that are part of the OBO Foundry (https://obofoundry.org/). Before the workshop we surveyed the community of biomedical ontology users and developers on topics including what tools they used to generate ontology diffs, how satisfied they were with those tools, and how they made changes to ontologies. We also demonstrated and solicited feedback on a proposed standard for representing ontology changes (which then became KGCL, the Knowledge Graph Change Language: https://github.com/INCATools/kgcl). Our pre-workshop survey of ontology users and developers was answered by 42 people. The first question asked what role they had (participants were allowed to select multiple answers). 15 people (36%) indicated that they were biocurators. 71% said they were ontology developers. 14% said they were data scientists; another 14% said they were domain scientists (presumably mostly biologists). 42% indicated that they play a role in tool development. The results of the survey, as well as a discussion of KGCL and its use to both report and carry out ontology changes, are described in our manuscript entitled "A Change Language for Ontologies and Knowledge Graphs" (https://arxiv.org/abs/2409.13906), which will soon also be published in OUP Database. This Zenodo record includes the survey and the anonymized results (in tsv format), as well as the slides from the change language workshop. |
