الوصف: In the cylinder head of internal combustion engines, camshafts are supported by journal bearings, facing pulsating loads. In order to improve friction and wear behaviour of the camshaft, a novel machining process was introduced. The machine hammer peening (MHP) is an innovative surface treatment, aiming at the simultaneous improvement of the topography and near-surface microstructure. The peening treatment is realized by using a hammering tool to create single indentson the surface. By a broad set of parameters, the indents determine the resulting surface topography. In this work, the process was adapted for the usage on a lathe. The advantages of the MHP are the possibility to create deterministic surface structures, while increasing hardness and residual compressive stresses in metal materials, at the same time. Surface structures are known to increase the hydrodynamic pressure in the lubricating gap and improve the oil retaining properties of the bearing. Compressive residual stresses are advantageous countering fatigue of components under tribological load. Surface structures, created by MHP, are formed byembossing or indenting the surface with the hammer tip. Therefore, the dimples, created by plastic deformation, are exhibiting bulges at the circumference. To use these surfaces in a bearing application, the bulges around the dimples have to be removed after structuring, with a finishing treatment. In tribology, the microstructure near the surface of a component like the camshaft, plays a decisiverole of the overall performance of the tribological system. The properties determine wear rates and friction. These properties are set by the manufacturing process and the finishing treatment. Each surface operation induces a specific amount of energy into the system and creates a “response” within the microstructure. Thus, each machining process creates a unique “finger print” within the material. In particular, the combined response of a MHP treated surface in combination with the finishing process is of great ...
