Natural and cultural heritage preservation and silviculture are often perceived as being at odds by the general public. For some people, silviculture is either “profitable” but detrimental to forests, or respectful but costly and “aided”. An experiment led on part of the Etroitures and Restant du Long Rocher boulders in the forest of Fontainebleau in 2018 showed that silviculture and heritage can enrich each other. Based on the works of the Barbizon School painters, a team of foresters, landscapers, naturalists and archaeologists set up an operating procedure without having recourse to any subsidy. The procedure resulted in an in-house “Guide for the management of boulders”. The procedure also addresses flats and moorlands that the boulder belt makes inaccessible to standard management machines. Highlights:• Silviculture was modified to restore the landscapes of Barbizon painters’ times.• An operating procedure was set up for the boulders of the forest of Fontainebleau.• A “Guide for the management of boulders” was written. ; Préservation du patrimoine naturel et culturel et sylviculture sont souvent perçus comme antinomiques par le grand public. Pour certains, la sylviculture est soit « rentable », mais destructrice, soit respectueuse mais onéreuse et « assistée ». Une expérience, menée en 2018 en forêt de Fontainebleau, sur une partie des chaos des Étroitures et du Restant du Long Rocher, illustre que sylviculture et patrimoine tant culturel que biologique peuvent s’enrichir mutuellement. À partir de l’œuvre des peintres de l’École de Barbizon, une équipe de forestiers, paysagistes, naturalistes et archéologues a mis au point un mode opératoire, réalisé sans subventions. Cette expérience a donné lieu, en interne, à un « Guide de gestion des chaos rocheux ». Ce mode opératoire traite aussi des platières et landes, rendues inaccessibles aux engins d’exploitation standard par la ceinture de chaos rocheux.
