الوصف: Introduction: The aim of this study was to determine the rate of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) production in Enterobacteriaceae, and their susceptibility against various antibiotics, isolated in the Microbiology Laboratories of Adıyaman State Hospital and 82nd Year State Hospital throughout 2009. Materials and Methods: We studied 852 isolates received at the two laboratories. The laboratory diagnosis of ESBL was established by Vitek-ESBL and double-disk synergy method. Results: 87.7% of the specimens were from outpatients and the rest were from inpatients. 90.9% of all specimens were urine samples. Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae were the most commonly isolated bacteria. The rate of ESBL production in all isolates was 33.8%. The rate of ESBL positivity in inpatient isolates was substantially higher than in outpatient isolates. Ampicillin resistance in Enterobacteriaceae was 71.2% but there was no carbapenem or tigecycline resistance. ESBL-producing isolates of Enterobacteriaceae were more resistant to antibiotics than non ESBL-producing isolates of Enterobacteriaceae. Conclusion: Our results are similar to previous results from other regions in Turkey. We think that this study may contribute to the ESBL results of our country by adding data from our region.
