الوصف: Amsterdam, Holland ; Arthur Lagawier was born in Amsterdam in 1901 and was trained in the diamond business by his father. He studied the Talmud from an early age in his home and pursued his studies in philosophy and languages throughout Europe. In 1924 he moved to Antwerp to carry on the family business and in 1941 escaped with his family shortly before the Nazi takeover. He eventually settled in Seattle in 1943 after brief stays in Cuba, New York, and Salt Lake City. Lagawier was a frequent lecturer on Judaism, and was also active as an instructor in religion and Jewish studies. He taught religious school at Herzl congregation, taught a course on Jewish literature, founded the Institute of Jewish Studies, where he was Education Director and teacher from 1965 to 1969, and was Director of Jewish Education at the Jewish Community Center. Lagawier was also closely associated with the Zionist movement in Seattle. He served as president and secretary of the Seattle Zionist council and was chairman of a special committee of the Federated Jewish Fund and Council to reconsider the Kashruth resolution. He was one of the founders of the Washington Association of Rabbis and a member of the Consulting Committee of the Kline Galland Home. The interview concludes with a reflection on the many influential Jewish thinkers he knew over the course of his life and a discussion about his personal library.
