2006-09-30 ; This paper analyzes how power electric companies in Japan should select their competitive strategy in the electricity business in order to gain and sustain a competitive advantage in the age of deregulation which is advancing rapidly in the energy industry. In the electricity business, companies need to select a strategy which reforms corporate culture and improves brand image. Afterwards, as it is particularly difficult for them to differentiate their product, they need to select a cost leadership strategy. Therefore, they should merge with other electric companies to utilize the economies of scale. In the dispersive power plant business, companies need to select a strategy which accumulates competence like maintenance and inspection technology of an electric plant. Thereafter, they should form a merger with a number of dispersive power plant companies to utilize the economies of scale. That is to say, as an inside approach strategy, like a resource strategy (resource-baed view) and a learning strategy, can absorb more environmental uncertainty than an outside approach strategy, like a positioning strategy (market positioning view) and a game strategy, they should first utilize an inside approach strategy, afterwards, they should utilize an outside approach strategy. It is effective for them to change from an inside approach strategy to an outside approach strategy to gain and sustain a competitive advantage in the age of deregulation. ; departmental bulletin paper |
