This paper discusses the heritage with emphasis on the recent incorporation of the cultural landscape as an equity instrument, implemented in the 1990. The methodological basis of this study is the literature review. At first, it was a brief flyover in the emergence of the modern concept of heritage that appears for the first time, in eighteenth-century Europe; we will see that the heritage while preserving political entered the cultural dimension to the understanding of built assets, expanding their field in the twentieth century. In the second phase, in the light of international documents prepared by Unesco, shows the consolidation of the cultural landscape as understanding of heritage. The cultural landscape emerges as an effort to overcome the old gap between tangible and intangible heritage, enabling the relational dialogue between them, and gather traditional life ways. Finally, the author presents two examples of the implementation of the cultural landscape in Brazil – one registered as world heritage by Unesco and the other sanctioned at national level ; Este trabalho pretende discutir o patrimônio com ênfase para a recente incorporação da paisagem cultural como instrumento patrimonial, implementada na década de 1990. A base metodológica deste estudo é a revisão bibliográfica. No primeiro momento, faz-se um breve sobrevoo no surgimento do conceito moderno de patrimônio que aparece, pela primeira vez, na Europa do século XVIII; veremos que o patrimônio enquanto política de preservação inseriu a dimensão cultural para a compreensão dos bens edificados, ampliando seu campo de atuação no século XX. No segundo momento, à luz de documentos internacionais elaborados pela Unesco, evidencia a consolidação da paisagem cultural como compreensão do patrimônio. A paisagem cultural emerge como esforço para superar o antigo distanciamento entre patrimônio material e imaterial, possibilitando o diálogo relacional entre ambos, além de congregar modos de vida tradicional.
