| الوصف: | Au xixe siècle en France, signer son acte de mariage est un indicateur de l’alphabétisation de l’individu. L’étude porte ici sur 45 895 actes de la période 1803-1902 issus d’un corpus national de mariages dont l’un des conjoints porte un patronyme commençant par les lettres TRA (« Enquête 3 000 Familles »). Les analyses ont montré que de nombreux facteurs interviennent dans la capacité à signer. Outre les paramètres classiques de la période : âge des mariés, milieu social (mesuré par la présence d’une signature du père et du métier des mariés), interviennent également l’effet régional et le critère rural-urbain, ainsi que les caractéristiques du centre urbain concerné (taille, rôle administratif). Cependant, l’analyse factorielle sur l’ensemble de ces paramètres indique qu’aucun d’entre eux n’est dominant en raison d’une variabilité individuelle très importante. ; An Approach to the Measure of Illiteracy in France. Signatures on Marriage Documents from « the 3 000 Families Survey ». In nineteenth century France signing a marriage document signified literacy. Of the 45,895 documents available between 1803 and 1902, national in scope, this study utilizes those in which one member of couple had a last name starting with the letters TRA (« 3 000 Families Survey »). One finding is that numerous factors account for the ability to sign. Other than the usual parameters: age at marriage, social milieu (guaged by a father’s signature and the employment status of bride and groom), there are also the regional effect, the rural-urban criterion, and the characteristics factorial analyses on the ensemble of these parameters indicate that none of them dominate, given a very significant individual variability. |
