الوصف: BACKGROUND: atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac rhythm disorder in the world, and its prevalence is constantly increasing. Although this condition is often associated with ageing, it can also affect young, athletic people. Aircrew are not exempt from this condition, which can have serious consequences if it occurs during a flight, often requiring preventive anticoagulation. Recent therapeutic advances, such as direct oral anticoagulants and catheter ablation procedures, have improved the management of AF. In addition, since 2013, European civil aviation regulations, which are applied in France, provide for the possibility of recovering fitness to fly under anticoagulant treatment. The rehabilitation of French pilots after an episode of AF is managed by national aeromedical commissions, with specific standards for civilian and military pilots. OBJECTIVE: the aim of this study is to understand the factors involved in the in-flight rehabilitation of French aircrew suffering from AF. METHOD: using the anonymised database of paper and computerised medical records from the Centre Principal d'Expertise Médicale du Personnel Navigant (CPEMPN) at the Hôpital National d'Instruction des Armées (HNIA) Percy (in Clamart), our descriptive, retrospective cohort observational study looked at the medical expertise of civilian and military aircrew. We assessed 62 records of patients aged over 18 who had an episode of atrial fibrillation (AF) between April 2013 and December 2022. The study focuses on the recovery of fitness to fly, which is crucial for these personnel, depending on the regulations and the type of aircrew (class 1 and 2 pilots, technical and commercial aircrew, military pilots and aircrew). Chi-square, Fisher's exact and Student's T tests were used to assess the factors predicting flight rehabilitation. Page 15 sur 177 RESULTS: the age at which AF is diagnosed in aircrew is early, with an average of 54, and even earlier in military aircrew, with an average of 44. The population studied is ...
