Letter from President Roosevelt stating that the Legal Division of the Public Works Administration will assist Governor McAlister with drafting legislation to allow municipalities to participate in public works projects. President Roosevelt's letter also includes suggestions for legislation revising municipal financing laws. Carbon copy of a response from Governor McAlister to President Roosevelt about passing legislation in the Tennessee General Assembly to foster rural electrification. He requests that Secretary of the Interior, Harold L. Ickes, provide sample language for such legislation. ; The Works Progress Administration (WPA) was a New Deal program designed to put unemployed Americans back to work. Between 1935 and its termination in 1943, the WPA employed approximately 8 million workers. In Tennessee, the WPA built roads, sewer systems, bridges, waterways, dams, viaducts, and overpasses. It also built major airports in Memphis, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Nashville, and at the Tri-Cities of Bristol, Johnson City, and Kingsport. |
