A modification to the Aristotelian definition of contrary opposites is proposed, accentuating the function of the adequate use of the principle of contradiction and the exclusive disjunction; which allows us to rethink, and even resolve, issues that have been under discussion for a long time, ranging from the validity of the classic Logical Square of Opposition, to the ad hoc of Russell's Theory of Descriptions, or the role of scalar terms in logical negation. For this purpose, it is taken as a common thread the critical analysis of the debates about the ambiguity, or not, of logical negation, its possible overlap between contradictory opposites and contraries in various propositions, and the scope of empty terms and category mistakes. And we detect various fallacies on the matter, resulting from an inadvertent change in the universe of discourse. |
