Cuando en 1580 Felipe II se acercó hasta la frontera portuguesa por Badajoz, en la provincia se respiraba un ambiente triunfalista por unir a su ya extenso entramado territorial Portugal y sus conquistas. En dicha ciudad y en numerosas localidades, cuando ya se tuvo conocimiento de la asunción del reino, se celebraron actos festivos por tal circunstancia. A pesar de las lógicas reticencias que existieron por parte de algunos lusos, la unión para ellos suponía una oportunidad, amparándose en el potencial militar de la Monarquía Hispánica, para conservar intacto sus extensos territorios allende los mares. También facilitó las relaciones en muchos campos entre los habitantes de uno y otro lugar. La frontera pareció difuminarse. Con el paso de los años esta entente primigenia fue dando paso al desencanto. Poco a poco se fue abriendo paso la añoranza por un pasado independiente. Los regocijos se convirtieron en 1640 en llamadas a las armas. La frontera volvió a resurgir en su aspecto más desabrido. La devastación, el terror y la muerte se enseñorearon durante una treintena de años en ambos lados. Portugal alcanzó su independencia. La corona española perdió una nueva empresa. Una y otra patentizaban el ocaso imperial. Lo peor fue el poso de rencor que generó esta guerra y que ha pervivido hasta tiempos muy recientes. ; When Philip II approached the Portuguese border through Badajoz in 1580, there was a triumphalist atmosphere in the province to unite Portugal and its conquests with its already extensive territorial network. In said city and in numerous localities, when the assumption of the kingdom was already known, festive acts were celebrated for such circumstance. Despite the logical reticence that existed on the part of some Portuguese, the union for them represented an opportunity, relying on the military potential of the Hispanic Monarchy, to preserve intact their extensive territories beyond the seas.
