الوصف: Margery Kempe’s strange behavior has long perplexed both scholars and first-time readers alike. I argue that this is because most have not yet developed reading practices adequate for recognizing and interpreting the alternative literate practices of oral or “preliterate” speakers, such as Kempe. Therefore, many take as outlandish what are in fact meaningful embodied literate acts, communications that utilize or rely on specific bodies and their immediate contexts to communicate critical perspectives. I argue that in order for meaning to be gauged in such acts, we must develop reading practices which attempt to account for particular bodies and their shifting meaning within varying contexts.
