The aim of this paper is to show the need of addressing the notion of solidarity not on the basis of what solidarity is or is supposed to be, but on the basis of which problems it has to address in order to be called solidarity. How can solidarity contribute to tackle concrete situations of injustice and unfreedom in today’s world, and particularly in today’s Europe? Which moral knots can solidarity help us untie and how can it do that? How can we employ the solidarity principle to assess and possibly overcome the manifold political crisis that the European political construction is running up against? Such problem-oriented approach can constitute a positive development towards future theories of solidarity. In this sense, the decision of mainly referring to European solidarity when dealing with the afore-mentioned issue is in no way limiting, but simply shows how today’s European social and political frame provides a problem (or a series of problems) on which a general discourse on solidarity can be possibly anchored. In this paper, I first analyse the connections and derivations between solidarity and other theoretical concepts in which solidarity is traditionally embedded such as justice, equality, morality. I then look at how several recent analyses tackled the solidarity issue from a perspective that contrasts with the one that I am describing, i.e. by focusing on the various types and models of solidarity rather than on the problems that solidarity – understood as a complex yet unitary notion – has to address. Considering strengths and limits of such model-oriented approach allows me to come to an alternative conclusion and introduce some key aspects of a problem-oriented definition and theory of solidarity. |
