الوصف: This final degree’s project consists in the creation of a model railway’s locomotive of the 5 inch gauge, with special emphasize on a simple and low-cost design. This project comes from the desire of giving a starting point to the railway enthusiasts that want to take part on the garden railway world with it’s own rolling stock built by themselves, given that locomotives of this style are usually costly. With this in mind, the different mechanical, electrical and electronic elements that make up the machine are designed, starting with defining its basic dimensions, calculating the required power and its motorization type. Based on this calculations, the power required to follow the specifications required by the Project charter is 350 W. The choice of motors is of the brushed DC kind, supplied by two 12 V lead-acid batteries. A first design proposal is shown specifying a motor model in which to base the rest of the elements like transmission, motor mounting and suspension. This first proposal, with two MY6812 electric motors mounted above each axle with direct gear transmission, is dismissed because of possible difficulties when machining and inserting the pinion onto the motor’s axle. Next, a second design is proposed, with a MY1016Z electric motor for each axle and chain transmission. This option is better suited for the requirements as it reduces complexity because the motor itself contains the reduction gear. The axle – pinion – wheels assembly is evaluated based on the forced to be applied and the rules defined on FCAF’s regulations. The suspension is achieved by standardized springs, having its guiding carried out by the locomotive’s chassis. This chassis consists of 5 laser cut pieces soldered by electrode welding. Different design options are proposed for the axle boxes, choosing the one made of different laser-cut pieces with screws holding them together because it’s the more economical option.
