الوصف: International audience ; An environmental issue that the West Indies are facing, for some years, is the management of massive arrivals of invasive brown algae: Sargassum spp. These algae impact the environment, the health of populations and the economy of the West Indies. Ways to valorize these algae are being studied through the production of biochars and activated carbons from Sargassum. Indeed, in recent years the use of biochars and activated carbons as a means to sequester soil-bound pollutants, such as Chlordecone (CLD), is increasingly studied.This study aims to evaluate the impact of biochar/activated carbon particle size from Sargasso on the environmental availability of CLD in nitisol and andosol. Four different types of carbon matrices were tested: phosphoric acid activated Sargassum charcoal (SargH3PO4), steam activated Sargassum charcoal (SargH2O), Sargassum biochar (ChSarg), and commercial activated carbon (ORBO). For each carbon matrix, a CLD-contaminated andosol and nitisol were amended to 2% with the following four particle classes: <50μm; 50-150μm; 150-200μm and >200μm. After four months of maturation, environmental availability tests were performed following a method adapted from ISO/DIS 16751 part A and then analyzed by GC-MS/MS. The results in nitisol showed that <50μm particles of ChSarg provided the greatest reduction in environmental availability of about 80±0.9%. For the SargH3PO4 matrix it was the <150μm classes that resulted in the greatest reduction (69±2.5%). For the last two matrices no statistical difference was observed between the four classes of particles. In andosol, particles <200μm of Sargassum biochar showed a better reduction in availability (mean reduction of 43±2.5%). For the SargH2O matrix it was the <150μm classes that were found to perform best.
