الوصف: The present PhD thesis studies the perception of the Greek Revolution during the 19th and the early 20th century in connection with the gradual formation of the Greek Public Sphere. Specifically, the Greek-language books and translations of works on the Revolution of 1821 are investigated, as well as the corresponding publications in the Periodical Press of the examined period. This thesis is divided into two parts. The first part presents and analyzes the quantitative data of the research: the trends of the publishing production, the types of works and articles, their places of publication, the fluctuations in their circulation, as well as the social characteristics of the authors. The second part investigates the comprehension of the Greek Revolution by the scholars of the 19th and early 20th century, by analyzing exemplary different and often conflicting ideas and perceptions of the boundaries of the national history that was formed at that time, the causes of the revolution, Philiki Etaireia, Europe, as well as the political constitution of the Greek revolutionaries. Exploring the different perceptions around these issues allows us to understand broader trends, attitudes and ideas of the time. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the intense interest of the Greek society for the revolution of 1821 and outlines the social characteristics of the persons who wrote relevant works or articles, from the quantitative and qualitative research of largely unexplored material. At the same time, the different judgments and interpretations expressed in the printed Public Sphere of the time around important aspects of the Revolution of 1821 were identified and studied, thus contributing to the understanding of the reception of the Greek revolution, but also in the study of Public History of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
