الوصف: The pitaya is an exotic fruit species that has been showing considerable growth in its production demand. As it is a rustic plant, its propagation is carried out mainly through cuttings, however, little is known about how this process should be done. Therefore, the objective was the influence of different substrates and watering shifts on the initial development of pitaya cuttings (Hylocereus undatus). The work was developed at the Federal Technological University of Paraná – Pato Branco Campus between September and December 2019, in a completely randomized design, with four replications, one stake per repetition and a 3 x 4 factorial scheme, with three substrates (substrate A: soil; substrate B: soil + sand + cattle manure in a 3:3:1 (v/v) ratio; substrate C: commercial vermiculite substrate) and four irrigation conditions (no irrigation – 0 days, watering shift every three days, six days and nine days). For this purpose, standardized 30 cm stakes (cladodes) of pitaya were cultivated in pots. Manual watering was carried out in the first two days of installation and after that, the indicated shifts were used, where 350 mL of water were supplied for each of the treatments. Ninety days after the start of the experiment, the following characteristics were evaluated: total plant height (ALTP), length of first-order shoot (CB), diameter of first-order shoot (DB), number of emitted shoots (NB), plant fresh mass (MP), root area (RA), root length (CR) and root volume (VR). Performed analysis of variance, polynomial regression and mean comparison test, with significance tested using the F test, with up to 5% probability of error. The software used to perform the statistical analysis was Genes. It was concluded that the substrates soil + sand + manure and commercial substrate resulted in more vigorous seedlings, while the substrate composed exclusively of soil resulted in low development of pitaya seedlings.
