الوصف: | International audience ; Bronze Age chronologies used in France are based on periodization or, in other words, on identifyingsuccessive periods. Distinguishing these periods is equivalent to separating them from one another, andcarving out sections in the time continuum. Dividing time into tranches is not neutral since it highlightsdiscontinuities and major transitions between periods that would otherwise be characterized by continuousor progressive changes. To periodize is therefore to propose a historical interpretation. To periodize the Bronze Age, French protohistorians commonly use the ternary system established byJean-Jacques Hatt between 1954 and 1962. Th is was at a time when workable documentation was limited.Th is system, despite numerous and complex modifications, no longer corresponds to an objective reality, but mainly possesses a conventional value. Based on a synthesis of data from various documentary fi elds,we are proposing a new periodization, subdivided in two, for the Bronze Age in the northern two thirds ofFrance. A fi rst Bronze Age, long and rather homogeneous by its very progressive development, delineatesitself from the XXVth to the mid XVth century B.C. It is succeeded by a second Bronze Age with a moreuneven but generally increasing evolution until the crisis of around 800 B.C.Th e extension of the Bronze Age, by including the Bell-Beaker period and its division in two, aims mostly tobetter report knowledge acquired recently. It’s also an invitation to look differently at the Bronze Age by freeingourselves from chronological frameworks which have become progressively more conventional and binding. |
