| الوصف: | This article analyses the persistence of the Araucan myth in 19th-century Chile, noting how despite the utilisation of the image of the Mapuches, the heroic features giving rise to the myth survived and were consistently used. Initially, during the independence struggles, the epic virtues of the ancient Mapuches in their fight against the Spanish conquistadores were considered worthy of emulation by patriots, thus prompting a new reading of the Araucan myth. Once independence was achieved, the presence of an indigenous people standing apart from the nation proved inimical to the progressive ideas of the ruling elite, who went on to construct a negative discourse around the Mapuches. By adopting this paradigm they were able to justify the armed conquest of Araucania, but it was insufficient to destroy the myth as the Chilean population clung to their legendary qualities. ; Cette recherche analyse la persistance du mythe araucan au cours du xixe siècle au Chili. Elle cherche à démontrer comment, en dépit de l’instrumentalisation de l’image des Mapuches, les caractéristiques héroïques à l’origine du mythe se sont maintenues et furent abondamment utilisées. Dans un premier temps, au cours de la guerre d’indépendance, les vertus épiques des anciens araucans, qui leur permirent de faire face aux conquérants espagnols, furent assumées par les patriotes, ce qui engendra une redéfinition du mythe. Une fois l’indépendance obtenue, la présence d’un peuple indigène séparé de la nation a interféré dans l’idéal progressiste de l’élite qui élabora un discours négatif sur les Mapuches. L’adoption de ce paradigme permit alors de justifier la conquête armée de l’Araucanie mais ne parvint cependant pas à détruire le mythe, dont les traits identitaires perdurèrent chez les Chiliens. ; Este trabajo analiza los discursos de la élite política intelectual chilena del siglo xix en relación con el mito araucano forjado durante la conquista de Chile.
