This article aims to explore the trajectory of a black primary school teacher, as well as an author and peripheral intellectual, who played a fundamental role, whether in the struggle between teachers for the improvement of infrastructure, or in the development of primary education in Bahia during the decades of 1920 and 1930. The intellectuality of Alberto de Assis is understood in the light of Sirinelli (2004), observing the author's individual perceptions and the transmission of his conceptions to others. Through a qualitative approach based on the analysis of newspapers and magazines of the time, the article seeks to situate the life and writing of this teacher for education in Bahia in a political context that involved a major strike in teaching in 1918, followed by a school reform, during the administration of Góes Calmon in the state (luz, 2009; Miguel et al., 2021). The research reveals not only the challenges faced by teaching, but also the confrontations and strategies adopted by Alberto de Assis, especially from writing, in a context of hygienist policies among attempts to modernize the formation of civilized citizens, capable of serving the country. ; Este artículo tiene como objetivo explorar la trayectoria de una maestra negra de escuela primaria, así como de un autor e intelectual periférico, que jugó un papel fundamental, ya sea en la lucha entre profesores por la mejora de la infraestructura, o en el desarrollo de la educación primaria en Bahía. durante las décadas de 1920 y 1930.
