الوصف: Thyroid gland is responsible for active thyroid hormones production, thyroxine (T 4 ) and triiodothyronine (T 3 ), under the influence of thyrotropin (TSH) control from the pituitary gland and release of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) from the hypothalamus. Hypothyroidism may, therefore, arise from a defect in any of these areas. Hypothyroidism is a common endocrinopathy in dogs, caused by a deficiency in the hormone synthesis by thyroid; it is more often observed in medium to large sized pure breeds, occurring preferentially between 3 to 8 years old. Some breeds as Doberman, Golden Retriever, Irish Setter, Airedale Terrier and Beagle seem to be predisposed (Beaver and Haug, 2003; Dixon, 2009).
