Ante el fracaso de la contrarrevolución interior efectuada por los realistas a partir prácticamente del inicio del sistema constitucional inaugurado por la revolución de Riego los elementos más absolutistas organizaron mediante la celebración del Congreso de Verona la invasión del territorio español por las tropas francesas (los Cien Mil Hijos de San Luis). La reacción de las instituciones locales leridanas, sobretodo de la Paeria (ayuntamiento) no se hizo esperar. Rápidamente rechazo fervientemente la imposición extranjera y organizaron la resistencia en el interior de la ciudad. Aunque esta topó con la penuria económica de la hacienda municipal, motivo por el cual, tuvieron que realizar una guerra defensiva. Esta tuvo éxito ya que resistieron a la invasión hasta el último día de octubre del año 1823, convirtiéndose juntamente con ciudades como Barcelona o Tarragona, en los baluartes del liberalismo. ; Before the failure of the inner contrarevolución conducted by the realists to practically start off of the beginning of the constitutional system inaugurated by the revolution of Riego the absolutists elements they organized by means of the celebration of the congress of Verona the invasion of the Spanish territory by the French troops (One hundred Thousand Children of San Luis). The reaction of the Lleida’s local institutions, coverall of the Paeria (city council) was not made hope. Quickly they rejected fervent the foreigner imposition and they organized the inner resistance of the city. Although this hit the economic shortage of the municipal property, reason by which, they had to make a defensive warfare.
