Tässä opinnäytetyössä tutkin kiinalaisten makeanveden helmien eettisyyttä korumateriaalina ja selvitän, onko helmikoruja mahdollista valmistaa paitsi kohtuullisen edullisesti, myös eettisesti ja ympäristöä kunnioittaen. Kartoitan myös lyhyesti helmille vaihtoehtoisia korumateriaaleja. Opinnäytetyöni nimi Cover Story viittaa helmen muodostumisen tapaan – simpukka muodostaa helmen peittämällä kuorensa sisään joutuneen hiekanjyvän helmiäisellä – sekä mielikuviin tai eräänlaiseen peitetarinaan, joilla helmiä markkinoidaan kuluttajille. Makeanveden helmi nähdään viattomuuden symbolina ja kuin vasta raikkaasta vedestä nostettuna, vaikka todellisuudessa makeanveden helmien viljelyä ympäröivät monet tehotuotannon ja vesiympäristön rehevöitymisen ongelmat. Osana opinnäytetyötäni suunnittelen ja valmistan kolmen korun sarjan, jossa käytän keskeisinä elementteinä kierrätettyjä makeanveden helmiä. ; This thesis addresses the ethical issues of Chinese freshwater pearls and the potential of designing and manufacturing pearl jewellery both ethically and economically. Alternative jewellery materials to pearls are also briefly explored. A mussel forms a pearl by covering an irritant inside it’s shell with layers and layers of nacre. A cover story is a story someone tells to hide the truth. The name of the thesis – Cover Story – refers to the hidden truth behind the marketing of freshwater pearls. Freshwater pearls are narrated as symbols of innocence and purity while in reality there are several murky mass production related environmental problems concerning the cultivation of freshwater pearls. After exploring the ethical aspects regarding the pearl industry a series of three pieces of jewellery using recycled freshwater pearls is designed and manufactured as a part of the thesis. ; 1 |
