الوصف: Children who are excluded from groups on the basis of their group membership such as their gender, race, and ethnicity are at risk of long‐term negative consequences such as depression and anxiety. From early childhood to adulthood, individuals face inclusion and exclusion from social groups, social relationships, and various other opportunities; this makes such instances of inclusion and exclusion pervasive components of social life. A fundamental aspect of development, therefore, is the ability to understand when exclusion is necessary to make groups work well and when it is wrong and unfair. Intergroup inclusion and exclusion is a relatively new line of research, and refers to exclusion that occurs due to in‐group bias, out‐group distrust, prejudicial attitudes, and stereotypic expectations. Thus, as children begin to recognize, with age, the role of prejudice and bias in decisions to exclude out‐group peers, their understanding and evaluations of the consequences and implications of intergroup inclusion and exclusion also develops. Intervention techniques, such as promoting intergroup contact (e.g., cross‐race friendships), can help ameliorate the prevalence of intergroup exclusion and reduce prejudice and bias in childhood.
