| الوصف: | σ. 227-254 ; Περίληψη στα αγγλικά ; In this paper I examine the contrast between Antigone and Ismene in the Antigone and Electra and Chrysothemis in the Electra within the light of contemporary mentalite. The aim of this historicizing reading is to show, by comparison, that the contrast between the two sisters in the Electra is a variation, not a repetition of the one in the earlier play. Ismene and Chrysothemis are depicted as conventional women (prudent and compliant) though not for the same purpose. Ismene* s language and arguments could evoke democratic ideology in the minds of the audience. She sets the issue within its public and political context and introduces a major issue of the play: obedience to law and to social conventions, which was current in Athens in the second half of the 5th century. However, Ismene acts under constraint; she obeys from fear and aidos. She fears social sanctions. Her motive is not political obligation and justice, but survival and social reputation.
