الوصف: Ph.D. ; This thesis examines the nature of cross-linguistic influence (CLI) by studying the acquisition of English VPCs and Cantonese DVCs in Cantonese-English bilingual children, as well as the acquisition of Cantonese DVCs and Mandarin DVCs in Cantonese-Mandarin bilingual children. By studying these target structures in two groups of bilingual children, we examine: i) how degree of structural overlap and language dominance may play a role in characterizing the occurrence and direction of CLI; ii) how bilingual children deal with the word order variations exhibited in English VPCs and Mandarin DVCs; and iii) how the typological characteristics of bilingual children’s two languages may influence their expression of motion events in each language. ; Our corpus-based study showed CLI effects from Cantonese in Cantonese-English bilingual children’s English VPCs, in that they started out with full verb-particle combinations without passing through a stage of small-clause-like bare particles and went through a stage of indeterminacy regarding word order of English VPCs before the age of three. Moreover, bilingual children used [V PP] more frequently than VPC in their use of the verb put when compared to monolinguals, suggesting that they pay extra attention on the meaning component of Ground in addition to Path in expressing the meaning of motion events. ; The elicited-production task in Cantonese-Mandarin bilingual children showed strong effects of language dominance. Cantonese-dominant bilinguals used many complex DVCs in both their Cantonese and Mandarin whereas Mandarin-dominant bilinguals patterned with Mandarin monolinguals, using fewer DVCs in both languages. In word order judgment task, Cantonese bilinguals preferred the object-initial form, which is the only available form in Cantonese. Other bilingual children showed less influence from Cantonese in their word order preferences. ; Overall, our study shows that CLI is a broad notion which can be manifested as acceleration, delay, word order preferences and ...
