| الوصف: | ‘With the Habit of a Knight one came to be dressed up as a new man’; thus, according to Fra Jean Baptiste le Mariner de Cany (1689), donning the garment of a Hospitaller was a profoundly transformative experience. The ritual of investiture marked every Hospitaller’s life; its obverse, the ritual of defrocking, marked the lives of only some, but its repercussions were profound. Members of the Order of Malta had a very distinctive habit they were meant to wear that denoted a collective identity, yet many retained their individuality through their clothes and related accessories. Taken together, such elements helped to shape the identity and image of being a Hospitaller. ; peer-reviewed |
