The article centers round the main creative work stages of an outstanding Belarusian artist from Vitebsk Mikalai Dranenka(1946–2017), most typical genre, thematic and stylistic features of his paintings. In the context of the late 20th century Vitebskart school the personality of this painter and graphic artist is quite individual and outstanding. The expressionist vision of thereality typical of this artist manifested itself in dynamic modulations of rhythm and color, in emotional architectonic tensionof the image in his compositions.Watercolor and graphics inspired M. Dranenka more than other art types at all the stages of his work since they correspondedhis expressive and dynamic nature. The artist experimented a lot with water-type, with different graphic materials. Since mid-1980s Mikalai Dranenka did Xlibris; he created an interesting series of book signs.As well as in water colors, nature motifs in M. Dranenka’s oil paintings always have emotional image interpretations.The artist’s landscapes are distinguished by the unity of approaches to the image where the central place is taken by theauthor’s emotions.Posters, which M. Dranenka created in different periods, are not only bright evidence of the art events of the last centurybut also special artefacts of their time. Outer laconicism, decorative reserved character and balance of forms in theircompositional structure can not hide the artist’s desire for dynamics and expressionism. The interest in printing graphics wasalso connected with the work at artistic decoration of booklets and catalogues. Mikalai Dranenka produced more than fiftyissues.
