الوصف: | International audience ; In a lucid vision, the archaeologist Marina Mazzei, director of the Operational Centre for the Archaeology of Daunia in Foggia, hypothesised, between 1987 and 2003, in the light of important finds in the archaeological area of the ancient city of Arpi, that the painters who worked in the workshops producing polychrome tempera-painted tablewares were also the authors of the paintings found on the pediments of the funerary hypogea and some of the domus. This intuition was confirmed in 2003 by the discovery of the Tomb of Nike, in the tympanum – the painting techniques, colours and iconography were identical to the polychrome craters found, again in Arpi, years earlier, in the Tomb of Ganymede. Her hypothesis, so many years after her untimely death, has been further confirmed by the resumption of the study of her excavations with the "Arpi Project", launched in 2014 and involving: the Soprintendenza A.B.A.P. for the Provinces of BAT and FG, for the study of painting techniques and the restoration of materials; the Centre Jean Bérard at Naples, for the topographical, stratigraphic and material study of the Hellenistic domus in Montarozzi and the burials excavated at Arpi; the University of Salerno, Department of Cultural Heritage Sciences, the University of Molise, Department of Biosciences and Territory and the C.N.R. of Tito Scalo in Potenza, for the updating of the discoveries in a georeferenced database with an archaeo-morphological and geophysical approach, and survey, typical of landscape archaeology; the University of Bari, Department of Chemistry for the study of pictorial pigments and clays. This collaboration, in particular with the Centre Jean Bérard has already borne its first fruits, with the resumption of the study and restoration of the frescoed plasterwork in the structural style, completed by the mosaic floors and grave goods found under the domus of the "lions and panthers" from the 1992-97 excavation, and in a permanent exhibition set up in 2016 at the Foggia Civic ... |
