الوصف: Although commercial oyster farming is a not a new industry to most of the US coastline it has only recently been approved for Texas. Successful operation of farms involves management of harmful biofouling that covers culture baskets. To aid in the success of new oyster farmers, the impacts of various management methods to control biofouling on gear and its impact on oyster growth and quality were investigated. Oysters (initial height = 60mm) were stocked into 72 adjustable long-line baskets (ALS) at a density of 70 oysters per basket. This research system was located in the southern end of Copano Bay, Texas. A factorial study was undertaken encompassing two methods of removal (e.g., desiccation, pressure spraying) and three time intervals of removal (one, two, and three weeks) over the course of six months (January 26 to June 2, 2021). Biofouling coverage of baskets increased significantly with time interval of removal (P < 0.0001) and was higher when pressure sprayed rather than desiccated (21.90 and 13.15%, respectively). Oyster growth was similar (P > 0.05) across all treatments, indicating that it was unaffected by method of removal and time interval of removal. Oyster condition index varied inconsistently across treatments and sampling sessions, possibly due to the confounding effect of a large decrease in salinity (31.14 to 9.17 ppt in less than one week) during the latter quarter of the project. Condition index was significantly lower (P < 0.0001) for oysters desiccated every three weeks. Oyster shell quality was high (cup ratio > 0.25; fan ratio > 0.63) for all treatments and did not vary significantly between method of removal and time interval of removal. Results indicate that desiccation of oysters is a more effective means of managing biofouling of oyster baskets under circumstances prevailing during the study. ; Life Sciences ; College of Science and Engineering
