This poster was presented at the TRB annual meeting virtually in January 2021. The one page handout is a text description of the findings. Roadside ROWs have the potential to be sites of pollinating insect conservation efforts as more natural habitats are lost across the nation. However, roadside ROWs can also be highly disturbed areas, due to on-road traffic and roadside management practices. Reduced mowing may result in more quality habitat through increased floral presence for habitat and foraging. Our objective is to examine if reduced roadside mowing along state highways is associated with changes in pollinating insect abundance and habitat quality for pollinators, across a range of landscapes and road characteristics. As part of an ongoing study, we measured pollinating insect abundance and habitat quality at 30 sites across New York State in 2019 and 2020. Preliminary findings: We found no significant differences in bee abundance between control and modified mowing treatments to date. We also found no significant difference in ROW HWG scorecard habitat quality score between control and modified mowing sites. We did find that invasive and noxious plant species of interest are higher in control sites than modified sites to date. Data collection will continue for another year. Project information is preliminary and not yet approved by NYSDOT. |
