Insufficient breast milk production often occurs in the first week postpartum, caused by several factors such as psychological stress, inadequate stimulation of prolactin and oxytocin hormones, and nutritional aspects of the mother’s diet. Some efforts that can be made to improve and increase breast milk production include back massage to provide a relaxing sensation and fulfilling the needs for a balanced nutritious diet, which can stimulate the release of prolaction and oxytocin hormones more effectively. This research aims to compare the effectiveness of oxytocin massage and consuming banana flower in increasing breast milk volume. The design of this study uses true experimental with a pre-post test design group (excluding a control group), involved 32 postpartum mothers of low stress levels and low to medium socioeconomic status. The pretest measured breast milk production volume on the 4th day postpartum, followed by a 7-day intervention period. Evaluation of breast milk production volume increase by performing a 30-minute breast pumping using a breast pump and measuring it using a measuring cup. The data were analyzed using an independent t-test. There was a difference in breast milk production increase between the two groups with a difference 6.375 cc, higher for the banana flowers consumption group compared to the oxytocin massage group. Statistically, oxytocin massage and banana flower consumption have the same effect. In other words, there is no strong evidence that the treatments given to the two groups produce different effect on breast milk production (p = 0.519). Oxytocin massage and consuming banana flowers can be alternative options for increasing breast milk volume. |
