In this article, I aim at reevaluating the explanations referring to the etymology of the Romanian expression a nimerit orbul Brăila literally, lsquo;[even] the blind found Brăilarsquo;, in accordance with Stelian Dumistrăcelrsquo;s opinion that this formula originated in the belief that Brăila was, in ancient times, a renown town. At the same time, I will prove B.P. Hasdeursquo;s priority in providing the correct phraseological etymology in this regard. As supplementary evidence, I will offer a series of quotations excerpted from some fairy tales collected by the famous ethnologist Tudor Pamfile. |
