الوصف: Dissertação de Mestrado em Engenharia Civil apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia ; Cable-stayed bridges have been constructed worldwide as solutions for medium and long spans. These are highly redundant structures with their behaviour governed by the stiffness of the load-bearing elements (deck, towers and cable-stays) and the cable forces distribution.A literature review shows an increasing interest in the optimization of cable-stayed bridges, however, the optimization considering discrete design variables is not usually addressed. Therefore, an optimization-based computational tool was developed in MATLAB environment to assist in the design of concrete cable-stayed bridges considering discrete design variables aiming at economic and structurally efficient solutions.The optimization problem is formulated as a cost minimization problem subject to a set of constraints related to strength and service criteria defined according to the Eurocodes provisions. The discrete design variables considered were: depth and width of the longitudinal beams of the beam-and-slab deck cross-section; depth, width and wall thickness of the towers cross-sections; height of the tower above the deck; and cross-sectional areas of the cable-stays. The cable-stays prestressing forces are considered as continuous design variables obtained from the influence coefficients method aiming at minimizing the displacements of bridge under permanent loads. These forces are used in the structural analysis of the bridge under permanent loads and road traffic live load, considering concrete time-dependent effects and second-order effects. A genetic algorithm is used to solve the optimization problem. The characteristics and capabilities of the developed computational tool are illustrated by solving application examples related to the optimization of a real-sized cable-stayed bridge. ; As pontes de tirantes têm sido utilizadas em todo o mundo como soluções para médios e longos vãos.
