الوصف: | The objective of this study is to analyze the patterns of antihypertensive drug use and their success in controlling hypertension (HyT) in a tri-racial sample. The GENOA study within the NHLBI-Family Blood Pressure Program includes population-based samples of 962 blacks from Jackson, MS, 707 whites from Rochester, MN, and 335 Hispanics from Starr County, TX, with essential HyT diagnosed before the age of 60. All medications and comorbid conditions (diabetes mellitus, MI, CVA) were recorded, and BP was measured by random zero sphygmomanometer. HyT control was defined as BP < 140/90 mm Hg. Of the 2,004 participants, 1,685 were drug-treated; of these, 52.1% were on monotherapy (mono rx) and 47.9% on combination therapy (combo rx). The prevalence of diabetes mellitus in Hispanics (79.1%) far exceeded that in blacks (21.9%) and whites (10.2%). Rates of MI and CVA were similar across study centers. The percentages of subjects treated (and % controlled) with diuretics (D), beta-blockers (B), other drugs (O), and combinations thereof were: (See |
