الوصف: This article has as problematizing question: what are the challenges and/or advances of the student assistance policy (AE) through the National Student Assistance Program (PNAES) in the context of a federal university in the interior of the Amazon? And due to this question, we sought to know: What is the profile of the beneficiaries served by the AE in the period from 2017 to 2020? What is the perception of students about AE in their academic performance? And what are the challenges and advances of the AE in the implementation of the PNAES from the students and institutional documents? The investigation is descriptive, of the case study type, unfolded in bibliographical, documental and empirical, whose locus was the Federal University of Western Pará (UFOPA), Campus headquarters in Santarém. In the empirical study, an electronic questionnaire (survey) was applied to students who received permanence aid between 2017 and 2020, with 75 completed questionnaires comprising the study sample. As for the results, the profile of the students indicates that this is a group with a prevalence of females (68%), with the majority in the 19-25 age group (64%) and (68%) of them self-identifying as brown. Among the survey participants, 77% agree that without student aid they would have difficulties to keep studying. As for the advances of the PNAES in the institution, these are revealed in the standardization of official documents and the challenges are, mainly, in the follow-up and evaluation of the aid made available to students. ; Este artigo tem como questão problematizadora: quais os desafios e/ou avanços da política de assistência estudantil (AE) por meio do Programa Nacional de Assistência Estudantil (PNAES) no contexto de uma universidade federal no interior da Amazônia?
