الوصف: | “Do you believe in life after death, young man?, ” asked the aging moth-erof suicidevictimAliceLiddell. “No. Sometimes Iwish I could, ” said Adam Dalgliesh of Scotland Yard, in-vestigating the suicide. “You won’t as you get older. If you’re like me, you’ll find you’ll pray for to-talnothing,”respondedMrs.Liddell. [From P.D. James ’ Cover Her Face] It surelymust rank as oneof the saddest statements I’ve ever read. I was on an air-plane, flying somewhere to speak, and read-ing(as Ioftendoduringmy timealoft) in an effort to keepupwith current events in my specific fields of interest. The cover it-self first caught my attention. In big, bold, ugly gray letters across the front of the Sep-tember 18, 2000 issue of Time magazine— rightnext to the frightful visage of an elder-lymanwith rubber tubing snakingacross his face and into his nostrils to provide the life-givingoxygenhesodesperatelyrequired —was the mournful phrase, “DYING ON OUR OWN TERMS.” When I opened the cover and began to read the featurearticle—“AKinder,Gentler Death”—by Time staff writer John Cloud, Iwas shocked.Notsomuchbythegraphic images of people in the throes of dying. Not so much by the pictures of seriously sickpeopleattached toamenagerieofma-chines. Not even by the photographic re-productionof the stark “DoNotResusci-tate”order fora terminalhospitalpatient. What shocked me most was the heart-rending comment of Felice Gans, a 72-year-old retired psychologist and terminally ill patientwhohadbeen interviewedbyMr. Cloud forhis article.Mrs.Ganswas suffer-ing fromincurablepancreatic cancer. Her prognosis was, to be quite blunt, undeni-ably dismal. She had no hope of any re-covery, much less of a cure. She tearfully acknowledged to the reporter that many days broughther “stark terror, ” and that she spent“partof everydaymourningmy own death. ” She then said, ever so sadly, “I sometimeswishthat Ihadabelief sys-tem ” (as quoted in Cloud, 2000, 156[12] |
