Critical Thinking Dispositions (CTD) are increasingly recognised as important in the application of thinking skills across academic, professional, and diverse real-world settings. However, there are limited open access measures of CTD, and questions remain as to the reliability and validity of existing CTD measures. The Student-Educator Negotiated Critical Thinking Dispositions Scale (SENCTDS) is a freely available scale comprised of 21 items measuring six dispositions: intrinsic goal orientation, attentiveness, organisation, perseverance, open-mindedness, and reflective scepticism. It has a simple scoring procedure and is a potentially useful scale for educators and researchers. This Methods Note paper reflects on the development of the SENCTDS and highlights the importance of methodological rigour in scale development and evaluation. In this context, as part of ongoing scale evaluation, we assess the factor structure and measurement properties of the SENCTDS across nations, and in the process outline key steps in scale development and iterative evaluation. While our results indicate that the SENCTDS provides a potentially useful measure of CTD that can be readily translated and used across nations, we conclude by highlighting the ongoing need for methodological rigour in efforts to advance research in the area of critical thinking. |
