We have compared satellite based albedo measurements to ground based albedo measurements and to the snow depth data received from the nearby SYNOP stations. The main object of this work was to study if we can determine the time of the snow melt by using satellite derived albedo product. The weekly mean satellite albedo (SAL) data was obtained from CM-SAF (Satellite Application Facility on Climate Monitoring) database and the ground based data from seven measurement sites in Finland. Results indicate a good agreement in timing of snow melt as derived from satellite derived albedo and ground based albedo, although the absolute values of albedo differs substantially from each other. In addition, the SAL value of the preceding summer can be reliably used for on-line derivation of the snow melting time. The coefficient of determination for the linear relationship of the remote and in-situ observation is 0.9. Based on the observations in 2005 and 2006 we can conclude that the CM-SAF weekly surface albedo product is a potential tool for remote sensing of the timing of the snow melt. |
