Inelastic scattering models in transport theory and their small mean free path analysis. (English summary) Math. Methods Appl. Sci. 23 (2000), no. 2, 121–145. Extended kinetic theory is considered for test particles (TP) in a background of particles that have two allowed quantum states: ground or excited. The mass of the test particles is supposed negligible in relation to that of background particles. The permitted collision processes are the excitation or de-excitation of background particles, but absorption of TP could be easily incorporated. Therefore the TP can acquire and lose kinetic energy. A linear Boltzmann equation is written down under these hypotheses. A dimensionless expression of this equation exhibits the explicit dependence on the Knudsen number (ε), and a compressed Chapman-Enskog expansion approach is used for an asymptotic analysis (ε → 0). An initial energy distribution of TP can attain a discrete set of energies as a consequence of inelastic collisions. This permits the introduction of a discrete set of TP distributions and gives a family of hydrodynamic equations in the diffusive approximation. Furthermore, the diffusion coefficients are analytically evaluated. |
