International audience ; Today, we live in a scenario where the call for citizen participation is increasing, especially thanks to the use of digital technologies (Proulx, 2020). This call for online participation represents a general desire for change in the current model of democracy, weakened by disinterest and declining trust in the current representative models of society. It is in this context that the civic tech movement, or civic technologies, emerges. It encompasses a range of digital initiatives aimed at promoting citizen participation. Thus, we are witnessing the emergence of new applications and platforms designed to encourage citizens to engage in participatory life.The new uses of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) will contribute to nurturing the collective imagination for the construction of a more participatory democracy in a digital context of exchanges and co-construction (Noyer, Raoul, Pailliart, 2013). In this scenario, public communication plays a crucial role as the sponsor and manager of data and exchanges within communities. It is therefore up to public communication professionals to encourage residents to participate and to evaluate the positive and negative impacts of their actions on the public sphere in a context of democracy and proximity communication (Bevort, 2002). Although these initiatives are still at an experimental stage, some local authorities in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (PACA) region are implementing digital tools to facilitate exchanges with residents. Among the features of these tools (such as the Maires et Citoyens, Intramuros, Neocity platforms), there is the possibility of conducting surveys, holding public consultations, reporting urban problems, participating in participatory budgets, and sharing city news.But how do civic tech initiatives allow residents to differently play their role as citizen actors in societal transformations, and what are the limits of this practice?
