In order to study whether the low serum amylase levels in obese subjects are due to the accompanied fatty liver, the serum amylase levels in patients with fatty liver were compared with those in patients with chronic hepatitis or liver cirrhosis. The serum amylase in patients with fatty liver was lower than other liver diseases, and was inversely correlated with the body weight. There was no significant difference in the serum amylase levels between chronic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis. Since the GPT, which indicates the liver cell damage, among the liver diseases showed almost the same levels, it was concluded that the low serum amylase levels in patients with fatty liver were due neither to the liver cell damages nor to the fibrotic changes of the liver. Amylase/body weight ratio in the patients with fatty liver was significantly lower than other liver diseases, and was considered a good indicator of fatty liver. Measurements of the serum amylase is recommended for the screening test of liver diseases, especially for the young students. ; departmental bulletin paper |
