The aim of this research was to assess the anti-inflammatory properties of Lantana camara extracts in the context of cardiac pathophysiology. The study involved the extraction of dried leaves from both Lantana camara and another plant through a maceration process. To induce a cardiac condition, the subjects (mice) were treated topically with a 5% imiquimod solution for a period of 10 days. Subsequently, they were treated with L. camara extract and a retinoid for another 10 days. The 50 mice were divided into five groups as follows: Group A served as a control with no induction and no treatment, Group B was induced to develop a cardiac condition without receiving any treatment, Group C was induced to develop a cardiac condition and treated topically with 0.05% L. camara extract, and Group D was induced to develop a cardiac condition and treated topically with 0.025% retinoid. The parameters under evaluation included clinical symptoms, gross examination, the severity of the cardiac affected area, interleukin-6 and interleukin-17 levels, and histopathological examination of cardiac tissues. Clinical symptoms, such as behavior, physical activity, and feeding habits, returned to normal in the treated groups. Furthermore, the gross examination revealed a gradual reduction in cardiac symptoms, such as scars, inflammation, and discoloration. Notably, the L. camara extract exhibited a stronger anti-inflammatory effect on the cardiac tissues of the mice with induced cardiac conditions as compared to the retinoid treatment. The levels of interleukin-6 and interleukin-17 in the serum were significantly reduced by all treatments (P≤0.05), with the L. camara extract showing a more pronounced effect. In conclusion, the findings of this study suggest that Lantana camara extract possesses significant anti-inflammatory and anti-cardiac pathophysiological properties in a mouse model with imiquimod-induced cardiac conditions. These results point to the potential therapeutic use of L. camara extract for the treatment of cardiac ... |
