Sacrificial moral dilemmas require individuals to choose between allowing harm to several people, or actively causing harm to one. These dilemmas have been foundational in studying how people resolve conflicts between competing moral principles, and responses are traditionally interpreted as reflecting either a ‘utilitarian’ concern for the greater good, or a ‘deontological’ refusal to enact harm. Existing research relies almost exclusively on the study of hypothetical dilemmas. Therefore, the present study confronted 438 participants with a real-life consequential dilemma involving minor but genuine physical harm. Participants decided whether to allow two confederates to receive a painful electroshock or shock a third confederate and provided motivations for their decisions. We manipulated whether sacrificial harm required up-close ‘personal’ action or could be ‘impersonally’ enacted from a distance. Moreover, each participant faced this choice twice, allowing us to examine how prior outcomes influence subsequent moral decisions. Results show that responses to traditional hypothetical dilemmas predict real-life behavior, but that the personal versus impersonal situation did not affect how participants acted. When confronting the dilemma a second time, 35% of participants switched their decision, demonstrating how powerfully context shapes moral choices. An analysis of participants' motivations reveals a rich and diverse spectrum of moral considerations beyond those captured in traditional utilitarian-deontological frameworks. These findings suggest the need to expand current theoretical models to better capture the nuanced ways people approach sacrificial trade-offs in consequential, real-world situations. |
