| الوصف: | The Endodontic treatment seeks to eliminate and/or reduce the microorganisms present in the root canal system, however the anatomical complexity of the canals makes it difficult to effectively disinfect. Bear it in mind, new techniques have been proposed to complement chemical-mechanical preparation, including photodynamic therapy (PDT). The objective of this integrative review is to analyze the effectiveness of PDT as an adjunct to endodontic treatment in the disinfection of the root canal system. The search for articles to perform this analysis was carried out in the PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, Web of Science and BVS (Lilacs and BBO) databases, using an advanced search strategy using MeSH terms (Medical Subject Heading) and words keywords of free terms that were most cited in previous publications on the subject. A total of 617 articles were found, of which 220 were duplicates and were excluded. The others were analyzed by two independent reviewers by reading the title, keywords and abstract, and among them, only 17 met the eligibility criteria. Finally, after reading the full text, 7 in vivo studies compatible with this review were included. Most of the included studies demonstrated that PDT is effective as an adjuvant agent in root canal disinfection. However, due to the considerable discrepancy between the variables used, it is extremely important that more randomized clinical trials be developed in order to define a standard application protocol. ; O tratamento endodôntico busca eliminar e/ou reduzir os microrganismos presentes no sistema de canais radiculares, entretanto a complexidade anatômica dos canais dificulta a desinfecção de maneira eficaz.
