الوصف: Introduction: postpartum depression represents a significant public health issue and the importance of its screening and treatment is well-established. However, this pathology remains underdiagnosed in France. Qualitative studies on postpartum depression in general practice are scarce, with the majority of existing research focusing on gathering the perspectives of medical professionals. The objective of this study it twofold: firstly, to examine the experiences of women who have suffered from postpartum depression, and secondly, to assess the role of their general practitioner in their care. Method: a qualitative study employing interpretative phenomenology was conducted with women who had experienced postpartum depression in the two years prior to recruitment. Thirteen semi-structured interviews were conducted between March 2023 and February 2024. Results: the results demonstrate the profound difficulties experienced by those afflicted with this form of depression, due to the intensity of its symptoms and the far-reaching repercussions on the personal, familial, and social spheres. The upheavals occurring during the postnatal period are socially perceived as a source of happiness and fulfilment for women. This makes it difficult for patients to express psychological suffering, which contributes to a general taboo on postnatal depression and complicates its detection. The impact of healthcare professionals on the patient’s experience of the long diagnostic and therapeutic process is essential. Patients expect healthcare professionals to listen to them and reassure them, and they value the relationship of trust with their general practitioner. Support from family and friends, and sharing experiences with peers, are essential. Patients expressed expectations of better post- partum support, consideration of psychological health during the perinatal period, and the inclusion of the father in the care provided.
